Abhorrence and hatred of the enemies of Ahl al-Bayt

Imam Sadiq (PBUH) said quoting from prophet Muhammad (PBUH): “Blessed is a person who meets Qa’im from my Ahl al-Bayt in a state that he has imitated him and has followed him and the Imams before him and has abhorred their enemies to Allah. Such people are my associates and the most honourable of my ummah (nation) before me.”

(Bihar al-Anwar, 51/72, Hadith 15)

Imam Kadhim (PBUH) said to Younes ibn Abd al-Rahman: “Blessed are our Shias; those who hold to our friendship and are resolute in acceptance of our Wilayah and abhorrence of our enemies during the Occultation of our Qa’im.”

Controlling the tongue, controlling the tongue, controlling the tongue

It is narrated that Imam Baqir (PBUH) told to Jabir Jo’afi: “Blessed are people who are resolute in believing us during the Occultation.” Jabir asked: “What is the most preferable act of a believer during that time?” Imam said: “Controlling the tongue (silence…)”

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “You should keep long silence, because it is a mean to drive away the devil and your help in the affairs of your religion.”

Controlling one’s tongue is the mean to save his religion. Of course silence is preferred when a person is embroiled in a sin (backbiting, slander, lie, curse and …) and can’t refrain from it. Sometimes a word can rule a person out as a religious man. Also, controlling the tongue is so important that it is related to other body limbs according to narrations.

Sincerity (Ikhlas) of deeds

Imam Ali (PBUH) told to Imam Hussain (PBUH): “Your ninth descendant rises rightfully and promote justice.” Imam Hussain (PBUH) said: “Does it happen?” Imam Ali (PBUH) said: “Swear to Allah, yes. But after perplexity and absence that no one stays on his religion but who are “sincere”.” (Bihar al-Anwar, 51/110, Hadith 2)

What is sincerity? Imam Sadiq (PBUH) said: “A sincere deed is the deed that you don’t desire to be praised from anyone but the Almighty Allah for doing it.” (Usul al-Kafi, ch. Sincerity, Hadith 4)

Sincerity is given to a person by Allah. One should seek to purify the impurities from his intensions (niyyah) and Allah would not leave his efforts fruitless and He will give him sincerity.

Elimination of doubt and suspicion

Imam Sadiq (PBUH) said in a Hadith: “A time will come to you when no one of you will find a place for his money (everyone becomes traitor). Kahili asked: “When will that happen?” Imam said: “This will happen when you miss your Imam… So, beware of doubt and suspicion. Reject doubts from your hearts. You have been ordered to be away from doubt. So, make yourselves away from it.”

Note: Doubt is the beginning of denial and if by being in doubt, we don’t seek for an answer, whether or not it becomes denial and leads to destruction.

Not to hasten the Reappearance time

Imam Ali (PBUH) says: “Do not make haste for this affair (the justice government) before its time or you will regret it and do not consider the period of Occultation to be long or your hearts will harden.” (Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 52)

Imam Sadiq (PBUH) says: “(Some people say) when was Mahdi born? Who has seen him? Where is he? When will he reappear? All of this is hastening God’s affair and doubting in His will… Those are who have lost in the world and unbelievers have an awful return.” (Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 53)

In other narrations from Ahl al-Bayt some phrases like to perish, to become afraid and … are used for hastening the Reappearance time.

To be submissive

Imam Sajjad (PBUH) says: “No one remains on his religion, unless… he does not find impediment in his heart from our commands and sayings, and is “submissive” to us Ahl al-Bayt.” (Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 51)

If someone does not have the attitude of submission, he would not be able to remain on his belief in Imam Mahdi (PBUH) during the Major Occultation and he would be ruled out as a religious man.

At the ending of a lengthy Hadith Imam Jawad (PBUH) says: “He (Imam Mahdi (PBUH)) will have an Occultation, the duration of which will be long and the days of which will be many. The sincere people will wait for his Reappearance and … those who are “submissive” will be saved at that time.” (Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 51)

Obedience

Abu Hamza asked Imam Baqir (PBUH): “What is the right of the Imam over the people?” He answered: “To listen to him and obey him.” (Usul al-Kafi, the book al-Hujjah)

Imaam Sadiq (PBUH): “Listening and obeying are the gates of goodness. Whoever listens and obeys, there is no argument and reason against him, but whoever listens and disobeys, no excuses will be accepted from him… We are a group whom God has obligated to be obeyed.” (Usul al-Kafi, the book al-Hujjah, Chapter of the obligation of obeying the Imam)

There is no judge to verify our obedience like ourselves and our own conscience. If we want to be helpers and not burdens, we must be obedient. What does Imam Mahdi (PBUH) want from us and how many times have we accepted and what have we done in return?

Watching our deeds

A believer should be careful that his spiritual value and his intimacy with Imam Mahdi (PBUH) doesn’t diminish and doesn’t turn into disinterest and not to lose Imam Mahdi’s (PBUH) attention. He should be careful not to neglect his duties towards him.

According to narrations of Ahl-al-Bayt, the deeds of the Shiite are presented to Imam Mahdi (PBUH). Especially every Monday, Thursday and Friday. In other words, it is necessary for Shiites to be careful not to commit a deed that embarrass them in front of their Imam and hurt him while presenting their deeds to him.

Imam Sadiq (PBUH) says: “Deeds are presented to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and the Imams every Thursday.” (Najm al-Saqib, ch. 11)

Imam Mahdi (PBUH) also says: “Indeed, we are aware of your situations and news and we have knowledge and nothing is hidden from us.” (Al-Ihtijaj, p. 497)

Paying Khums (one-fifth share)

One of the important duties is the payment of financial rights of Imam Mahdi (PBUH) such as Khums which is obligatory and one of the ten Ancillaries in Islam and it should be noted that using the property whose Khums has not been paid is forbidden.

Imam Sadiq (PBUH) says: “The most severe and harsh moment in the Day of Judgment is when the owners of Khums stand and say: “O God! where is our Khums; they have not paid our Khums.”” (📚Avali al-leali, v. 3, p. 127)

Imam Mahdi (PBUH) clearly has stated: “Curse of Allah and the angels and all people be upon those who have used a single dirham from our property (Khums) without our permission… Indeed prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Anyone who considers a Haram (forbidden) thing of my progeny as Halal (lawful) is eligible for my curse and that of every prophet who his prayer is accepted.”” (📚Kamal al-Din and Tamam al-Nimeh, p. 522; Al-Ihtijaj, p. 479)

Renewing allegiance to Imam Mahdi (PBUH)

This renewing the allegiance, which is of the duties of believers, is better to be done after every obligatory prayer or at least once a day or once a week. Implying that the person who pledges allegiance promises and vows not to refuse to aid Imam Mahdi (PBUH) and help him with his life and his property as much as he can. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also commanded the all nation in al-Ghadir Sermon to pledge allegiance to the Imams this way.

In this type of allegiance there are a few conditions: 1. The person who pledges allegiance should make a firm and final decision from his heart. 2. He should verbalize his allegiance. 3. He puts his hand in the Imam’s hand, shakes his hands and pledges allegiance (at the time of his presence and Reappearance).

During the Occultation one could also pledge allegiance to Imam Mahdi’s (PBUH) General Deputies; Jame al-Sharayet Faqihs (jurisconsults who possess all the necessary conditions) especially Wali-e Faqih (the Supreme Islamic Leader). It means that pledging allegiance to him who has all the conditions for Welayat-e Faqih (guardianship of Islamic jurist) is the same as pledging allegiance to Imam Mahdi (PBUH).
